Coriole Music Festival

This year's Coriole Music Festival will be held on Saturday 1st May and Sunday 2nd May 2010.

Three concerts held over the first weekend of May, in the Barrel Room at Coriole, McLaren Vale, South Australia.

After last year's adventures with folk-inspired music from eastern Europe, Music Director Christopher Burrell this year will present a programme that highlights JS Bach and Beethoven, two foundations of western European music.

Beethoven's String Quartets make up one of the extraordinary pinnacles of our concert repertoire. This year we will hear three quartets that trace the development from his early more formal writing to the intense expressive freedom of his late quartets. These will be performed by the Goldner String Quartet who have recently recorded the full set of Beethoven quartets for ABC Classics.

We will also hear instrumental music of JS Bach, including two of the wonderful suites for solo cello and the flute sonata in B minor, where Bach combines skilful interweaving of parts with sheer melodic freshness, sometimes reflective, sometimes witty and playful.

The Festival includes the world premiere of a new quartet by Australian composer Ian Munro, specially commissioned by the Coriole Music Festival 2010 with support from festival patrons. This three-movement work was finished in late 2009 and is loosely based on a book of evocative woodcuts in the Ballarat Gallery, showing vignettes of Australian life.

As a contrast, the Festival also includes French music for harp and flute, showing how well the sonority of the harp matches French impressionist writing. This includes pieces by Debussy, Faure and Ibert, the Variations on a Theme in Ancient Style by Carlos Salzedo (1885-1961) who helped establish the harp as a significant modern concert instrument, and Ravel's Introduction and Allegro for string quartet, flute, clarinet and harp, a work of ethereal and enchanting beauty.

Our performers this year are leading Australian musicians the Goldner Quartet, Julian Smiles (cello), Geoffrey Collins (flute), Ian Munro (pianist and composer), Alice Giles (harp), and Dean Newcomb (clarinet).

We advise you to book early. On receipt of your booking and payment seats will be allocated and tickets forwarded to you from mid February.
